Good Advice

Every little bit counts! Any time you reach out and try to make the world a better place is a good thing.  Here are some thoughts we'd like to pass along as you think about how to help others.

General
  • Get to know the people.  You will be most effective when you personally know the situation of those you want to help.
  • Giving money can be helpful, but it shouldn't be the default.  Think past handing out money and think about specific items people may need.
  • You'll be surprised how many in your own community can benefit from some talent or resource you have to offer.  Become familiar with opportunities within your community and get involved.
Safety
  • Always communicate with friends and family of your plans.  You need the insights and perspective from those who care about you.  Consider carefully how you plan to help -- thinking about your safety as well as those you wish to help.
  • Never work alone.  Even with the best intentions, misunderstandings can occur.  Having other people working with you can help protect everyone.  And this is a great opportunity to get more people involved too!
  • Before publishing photos or stories of people, it's best to check first.
Setting Personal Boundaries
  • You can't help everyone, you can't solve all of the problems.  When you start to feel weighed down, take a moment to remind yourself that it's okay to set limits.  And make sure to remind those you help that you aren't able to solve everything.
  • Be honest with yourself and others.  Don't feel pressure to over-promise.  Setting reasonable expectations will help you AND those receiving help.
